Overhand Throw Velocity:
Measures a player's overhand throwing velocity in miles per hour (MPH). We can easily use the OTV to determine a players skill ability at various positions. For softball, we know the ball travels about 3.3 feet per throw miles per hour. So a player who has an overhand velo of 60 mph can throw a ball about (60 x 3.3) 198 feet in the air with a launch angle of about 30 degrees.
Grip Strength:
Measures a player's ability to transfer power generated by the legs, core, and shoulders to the bat while swinging and ball while throwing. One indicator we use grip strength for hitting is in the balance between the left and right hand grip strengths. A right handed hitter who has a right hand grip of say 75 and a left hand grip of say 55 shows the front or lead arm is much weaker than the back arm. This will lead to many hitting deficiency's including a reduction of exit speed.
